Even though a flu infection may not be the most serious of all infections, it can be extremely disconcerting and can adversely affect the daily activities of a person. In most cases the flu infection tends to resolve on its own but through some treatment it can be effectively managed. The flu treatment can help in providing relief from the symptoms commonly associated with the infection. These symptoms include fever, cough, body ache etc. The medicines for this infection can help in shortening the length as well as severity of the infection. The treatment for flu largely depends on the severity of the symptoms.
Decongestants can be taken as part of flu treatment. These decongestants come in the form of nasal or oral sprays and can be used to reduce the swelling within the nasal passageways. It is however important to ensure that the decongestants are not used in excess of few days as these can have severe rebound symptoms. In some cases saline sprays can also be used as these can help in loosening thick mucus. Compared to decongestants these can be used for extended time periods. In case the flu is accompanied with cough then it can be treated with some cough medicines and these include cough expectorants as well as suppressants. In case of other problems like postnasal drip or runny nose, an antihistamine can be prescribed and can provide considerable relief from the symptoms. The bodyaches associated with flu can be treated with medicines like ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen etc. However these medications come with some risk and should not be prescribed to children.
Any antiviral medicines prescribed as a part of the flu treatment should be taken within the initial 48 hours from the time the symptoms begin. This is because such medicines when taken initially tend to be more effective. It is important to understand that antibiotic medicines cannot be used in treating bacterial infections as flu is caused by viruses. The antivirals that may be prescribed include tamiflu and relenza. This medicine can be taken once or twice every day for a period of five days. Relenza is available in the form of dry powder and it can be taken through the inhaler. It is extremely important to take plenty of rest as a part of the treatment plan. This is because lack of rest can lower the immunity levels and this can in turn adversely affect the recovery process. It is advisable for those suffering from flu to take few days off from school or work so as to recover from the condition and to avoid passing on the infection to others.
It is also important to remain well hydrated as a part of flu treatment. This is because fluids help in keeping the nasal as well as chest secretions sufficiently loose. Humidifiers can also help in ensuring that the secretions remain loose. Those suffering from flu can benefit from taking supplements including Vitamin C and following a healthy diet while incorporating plenty of fruits as well as vegetables. It is also important to avoid cigarette smoke as it can make the cough and flu worse.
